Essential Spanish connectors for exam writing
Coherence and cohesion are marked directly in Spanish writing exams, and connectors are the easiest way to earn those points. Here are the ones worth memorising, grouped by function.
To add and sequence
además (besides), asimismo (likewise), en primer lugar / en segundo lugar (firstly / secondly), por un lado… por otro lado (on one hand… on the other), finalmente (finally).
To contrast
sin embargo (however), no obstante (nevertheless), a pesar de (despite), aunque (although), por el contrario (on the contrary).
To give reasons and results
porque (because), ya que / puesto que (since), por eso / por lo tanto (therefore), debido a (due to), así que (so).
To give opinions and conclude
en mi opinión (in my opinion), considero que (I consider that), en resumen (in short), en conclusión (in conclusion), en definitiva (all in all).
