DELE B2 writing: tasks, structure and how to prepare

The two B2 writing tasks

At B2 the writing paper (Expresión e interacción escritas) has two tasks. Task 1 usually asks you to write a formal letter or email responding to an input text — a complaint, a request or a reply. Task 2 gives you a choice: an opinion text, an article or a report, often based on a short prompt or a simple graph.

Each task typically asks for around 150–180 words. Always confirm the current numbers in the official Instituto Cervantes specification.

How it's marked

Examiners score adequacy to the task (did you do everything asked, in the right register?), coherence and cohesion, correctness (grammar and spelling) and range (varied vocabulary and structures). At B2 they expect some complex sentences, clear connectors and controlled use of the subjunctive.

A reliable B2 structure

For the formal letter: greeting, reason for writing, development of each point, a request or conclusion, and a formal sign-off. For the opinion text: an introduction stating your position, two argument paragraphs with examples, and a short conclusion.

Signal your organisation with connectors — en primer lugar, además, por otro lado, sin embargo, en conclusión.

A simple preparation plan

Write two timed answers a week, one of each task type. Review each against the four criteria and note recurring errors. Rewriting a corrected version fixes mistakes faster than always starting fresh.
