DELE B1 writing: what to expect and how to pass
DELE B1 shows you can handle everyday written Spanish. The writing paper rewards clear, complete answers rather than complex language. Here's what to expect and how to prepare.
The B1 writing tasks
At B1 the writing paper has two tasks. One is usually a personal message — an email or letter to a friend (informal) or a simple formal message; the other is a short text such as a description, a narration of an experience, or an opinion. Word counts are typically around 100–150 words per task; confirm with the official guide.
What examiners reward
Completing every part of the task, staying on topic, organising ideas simply and clearly, and controlling basic grammar: present and past tenses (preterite and imperfect), agreement and common prepositions. At B1, accuracy matters more than ambitious language.
Simple structures that score
Use a short opening, one or two clear paragraphs, and a closing line. Basic connectors go a long way — primero, después, porque, pero, por eso. Keep sentences you can control rather than attempting complex ones that break down.
